Jeanine Fitzgerald Workshop

What's Your Problem Anyway?

On June 3, 2010 parents and staff attended a workshop on bullying...focusing on children's lack of skills in solving peer conflicts effectively.  Jeanine also described and gave examples of peer interactions that come from misuse of power.  All those that attended found Jeanine very informative as she addressed all age groups; toddler through high school.  She was also able to provide the group examples of how bullying can become  very confusing when students and adults are not clear on what the bullying is about or think they know what it is about!

We hope to have her back again next year, stay tuned!!

A recent and exciting announcement from the FMRSD Administration Office:

Below find the recently developed FMRSD Special Education Philosophy, which we aspire to put into place.   Implementation of parts of this statement of philosophy will begin in the fall of 2010. Administrators, in conjunction with special educators are in the process of developing a strategic plan, which includes timelines and action steps for each aspect to support it.  We will keep you updated about the roll out and implementation as we bring this philosophy to fruition.  If you have questions about this work, please see your principal or Donna Jones, Special Education Director.  We are looking forward to continuing to develop our special education for the benefit of our students and staff.

Statement of Special Education Philosophy

Fall Mountain Regional School District

January 2010

The Fall Mountain Regional School District is committed to providing a caring community of dedicated staff and involved parents to meet the diverse academic, emotional and social needs of students with educational disabilities in a respectful and positive environment. We strive to help all students feel challenged and empowered to become active and contributing members of society based on their individual strengths and abilities. Emphasis is placed on accountability and collaboration, which includes communication among those who support students’ overall growth and development: students, families, educators, service providers and community members. Access to general education opportunities is the right of every student. We are dedicated in our efforts to provide the necessary supports for all students to learn in their communities to the maximum extent appropriate. It is the goal of Fall Mountain Regional School District that all students reach their social, artistic, academic, and physical potential.

The district aspires to this philosophy. Implementation of parts of this statement of philosophy will begin in the fall of 2010.

A Reminder From The Special Education Department

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The NH Department of Education will be asking our department to distribute the Parent Involvement Survey in March. Please take a few minutes to fill out this confidential survey. This survey is very important as the results of the survey will help the NH Dept. of Education, Bureau of SPED better understand how we can strengthen parent involvement in the special education process. You may also find examples of the survey on the NH Connections website and the NH Department of Education website. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this survey!

Sincerely,

Donna C. Jones

Special Education Director

Student Services Parent Forum

On November 18th, the FMRSD Student Services Department conducted the second Parent Forum on "Defining and Demystifying Transition For Students Across All Grade Levels".  The forum was well attended with both parents and staff members.  Once again, Amy Sevelle-Nelson, Educational Consultant, was present to facilitate and clearify information that was shared throughout the evening.

Staff presented what transition looks like for students entering Early Childhood to Kindegarten, Kindegarten to Elementary, Elementary to MIddle, Middle to High School and High School to Post-Secondary.

Discussions focused around that fact that transition can include general procedures for all students and/or may be customized for certain students.
